Many Zanzibari women face poverty, unemployment, poor health care, and domestic violence. While domestic violence is common, it is considered taboo and thus is rarely discussed openly in communities. In 2008, a Women without Borders (WwB) team travelled to Zanzibar, Tanzania, to hold a series of empowerment workshops over the course of three weeks. These workshops employed a curriculum that WwB specifically tailored to the local realities, including interactive team sessions, lectures, and swimming lessons provided by a group of Austrian female lifeguards. Through this programme, the participating women learned about the importance of self–worth, confidence, and trust.
