U.S. Department of State Side Event on Rehabilitation and Reintegration of ISIS Family Members

Women without Borders (WwB) Founder and Executive Director Dr. Edit Schlaffer participates in the side event on ‘Rehabilitation and Reintegration of ISIS Family Members,’ organised by the U.S. Department of State. Mr. Chris Harnisch, Deputy Coordinator for Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) in Bureau of Counterterrorism gave opening remarks followed by Mr. Yerzhan Ashikbayev, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Schlaffer participated in the panel discussion: ‘Encouraging Community Involvement in Rehabilitation and Reintegration of ISIS Family Members,’ moderated by Mr. Michael Duffin, Policy Advisor, from the Office of Countering Violent Extremism in Bureau of Counterterrorism. The other panelists were Dr. Khalid Koser, Executive Director, Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund and Mr. Milo Comerford, Senior Manager of Policy, Institute for Strategic Dialogue. Dr. Schlaffer spoke about the importance of building up community resilience and strengthening grassroots networks in receiving countries to ensure cycles of extremism do not persist.
