UNOCT Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week 2020

As part of UNOCT’s Virtual Counter Terrorism Week, Women without Borders (WwB) Founder and Executive Director Dr. Edit Schlaffer participated in and delivered an intervention during the opening plenary, which included keynote remarks from UN Secretary-General H.E. Mr. António Guterres and moderation from Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism of UNOCT. Dr. Schlaffer’s remarks highlighted WwB’s work over the past two decades in the female empowerment and P/CVE spaces and she called on policymakers and stakeholders alike to invest in women-led civil society and grassroots initiatives and leaders and to strengthen community networks to prevent the further spread of violent extremism.

The Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week was convened under the overarching theme of “Strategic and Practical Challenges of Countering Terrorism in a Global Pandemic Environment”. In addition to the opening plenary, UNOCT held nine additional webinars and interactive discussions focusing on UN and stakeholder priorities that included the role of civil society in building resilient communities and preventing violent extremism.
