Violence against women continues to be a taboo subject in India, and there are few spaces that enable women to talk openly about their plight. While a crime is committed against women every 3 minutes, cases of cruelty by husbands and in-laws are committed every 9 minutes, and every 29 minutes a woman is raped. Many incidents go unreported, families often do not stand by the woman, and acts of domestic violence tend to be considered a matter that the woman must simply put up with. The notion that masculinity and manhood is reflected by a man’s ability to control their wife is deeply engrained in the Indian psyche. Experts contend that these problems stem from a cultural bias: men have been conditioned to perceive themselves as the superior and dominant sex.
