Thirteen months after the 2004 tsunami, Women without Borders (WwB) started an innovative project in south India: swimming training for girls and women. WwB recognised the importance of physical education as a tool for female empowerment. Numerous studies have shown that regular involvement in sports has a positive influence on the development of self-esteem. The aim of the program ‘Swim, enjoy and win!’ was to help the women who participated to gain self-confidence, to get to know their own skills and talents, and to gain control over every facet of their lives. If another tsunami were to happen, knowing to swim may also spell the difference between life and death. WwB chronicled the process in its first self-produced film, ‘Different Strokes’. In the film, women along the southern Indian coast learn to swim and show courage as they reach new shores, overcome borders, and take life into their own hands. Women without Borders publicly premiered the film in Vienna in celebration of International Women’s Day 2006.
